Amy Adams To Star In Janis Joplin Biopic

Though not the biggest piece of casting news this week, Lee Daniels has found his Janis Joplin: Actress Amy Adams.

The Precious and The Butler director is already hard at work on his next film, a biopic about ’60s music icon Janis Joplin. Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter a little bit about his plans for the film, and revealed that he has already cinched his leading lady.

“Guess what? She can sing her ass off!” Daniels said of Adams, 39, who will play the titular role.

Though a rock biopic seems a little bit out of Daniels’ wheelhouse, he said that the story of Janis Joplin was too interesting to ignore. A film about the blues / psychedelic singer-songwriter has been in development hell for almost a decade.

“I had no idea Janis Joplin was so smart — intellectual, even. Look, some of the smartest people in the world have been drug addicts,” Daniels said.

Even though Daniels will face challenges in resurrecting the troubled biopic’s production, he’s already thinking ahead to his next project.

“After Joplin, I’m hoping to get Miss Saigon off the ground,” he said.

He’s also thinking about his next project after that.

“And then — I want to make a horror movie!”

Lee Daniels’ The Butler only just opened, and is enjoying strong box office numbers and critical acclaim.
