ISU Bomb Threat Deemed False, Campus Declared Safe And Secure

Normal, IL – On Tuesday evening, a bomb threat in the form of a handwritten note was discovered in a bathroom of Schroeder Hall at Illinois State University (ISU). At that time, the campus was put on alert and an email was sent out to faculty, staff, and students alerting the campus of the ISU bomb threat.

Just minutes ago, ISU President Timothy J. Flanagan sent out an update about the ISU bomb threat to faculty, staff, and students. The update reads:

Dear Students,

I am writing to give you a brief update on yesterday’s incident regarding the threatening note found in Schroeder Hall. University police and security personnel have conducted thorough building sweeps and are keeping a presence in Schroeder, something that will continue through Friday. Nothing suspicious has been discovered and the building remains safe and secure.

Over the years, threatening notes of this type have appeared on several occasions, not only at Illinois State, but on college campuses across the country. While these notes are most often viewed as an attempt to disrupt normal activity, we must always take such communications seriously.

We do not want to overreact to this situation and add credibility to the individuals and copycats who commit such acts. Still, your safety is our first priority, so I felt it necessary to take these extra safety precautions, alert you quickly and keep you updated.

Although this incident did not rise to the level of requiring an emergency text alert, which occurs when there is an immediate safety danger, it serves as a reminder that we should be mindful of our environment and security. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up for our emergency texts alerts by following links from IllinoisState.edu/alerts. Information is also communicated via the University homepage, Facebook, Twitter feeds and other applications.

Finally, I want to thank you for your patience and maturity throughout this incident. Your behavior is just one more reason we are proud of our Illinois State University students.

At the time of the discovery of the ISU bomb threat, ISU officials contacted the FBI to help assess the situation. Immediately after the discovery, the threat was classified as “low to medium.”

Since that time, the ISU bomb threat has been deemed false and the ISU campus has been declared safe and secure. Additional security will remain on campus through Friday.
