John Travolta Leaving Scientology Rumors Swirl But…

Is John Travolta leaving Scientology? By now, we’ve all heard the rumors that the 59-year-old Saturday Night Fever sensation is thinking of defecting from the religion.

But is there any truth to these rumors? Or are they just the kind of speculation that people indulge in after a big event like King Of Queens actress Leah Remini’s defection from Scientology earlier this summer?

The rumors hinting that John Travolta is leaving Scientology but being blocked by the church seem a little shaky.

For instance, ShowBizSpy said Travolta and his 13-year-old daughter were being trailed by an alleged Scientology minder at Tony Bennett’s 87th birthday party a few days ago.

The unnamed source — and aren’t they always? — said that this fearsome female minder “spent most of the night aggressively staring at anyone Johnny talked to.”

Wow. I’m shaking in my boots for poor John already.

A similar but longer piece in Celeb Dirty Laundry said more or less the same thing about Travolta’s shadow at the Bennett party. They said Scientology “supposedly” viewed Travolta as a flight risk from the Church.

Eh, I’m not too sure about all this.

Earlier this month, Leah Remini filed a missing persons report with the Los Angeles Police Department. She alleged that Scientology leader David Miscavige’s wife Shelly had been missing for years.

Within less than 24 hours, LAPD talked to Shelly Miscavige and closed the report as unfounded. And Scientology leaders blasted the missing persons filing as harassment.

Scientology is widely unpopular. Nobody’s disputing that. But if Leah Remini really thought Shelly Miscavige was missing since the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wedding in 2006, one can’t help but think she should have spoken out long before 2013.

In any event it’s pretty easy to start rumors about unpopular organizations. People who share your dislike will be happy to spread them.

As for John Travolta, he’s a fairly big boy. I think he can speak for himself.

And I don’t think it’s impossible that a person trailing a star with over $100 million is a personal assistant, not a Scientology minder.

I can’t rule out the rumor as a complete and total hoax. It isn’t impossible that John Travolta may leave Scientology. But if he does, I suspect he’ll let us know.
