Dick Van Dyke Makes Jokes After Car Burns To A Crisp

Dick Van Dyke may have escaped death after his car caught on fire on the 101 Freeway in California, but the 87-year old hasn’t lost his sense of humor.

The actor said he was driving his Jaguar when the car “started making a noise.” Dick said at first he thought it was just a flat tire, but then saw the car smoking and realized it was something much more serious.

There had initially been reports that Dick Van Dyke was passed out at the wheel, but he refuted that. Dick said he remained in the car, trying to call “the DMV,” he said, when an alert citizen saw the smoke and pulled him out of the car. Dick said he was safely out of the vehicle long before it erupted into flames, but he still said it was a bit too close for comfort.

Afterward, Van Dyke was in a good mood about the crash, joking with a cameraman who came to the scene to report on the crash.

“Tell ’em I have a nice used car for sale,” he joked.

The crash was a problem for other commuters. The two right lanes of the 101 eastbound were closed as firefighters put out the burning Jaguar.

Dick’s wife, Arlene Van Dyke, sent out an image of the burnt car and some thanks for the speedy rescue.

Police said the 87-year-old actor won’t be cited for the accident, and reports said Dick was not harmed in the incident.

Dick Van Dyke later got a ride home from his wife. It wasn’t reported where the burned Jaguar ended up, but he’ll likely have a hard time selling it now.
