Pastor Waves At Cops, So They Cuff Him And Threaten To Tase Him [Video]

An Indiana man was almost tased after offering a simple, friendly wave to police officers as he rode by on his bicycle.

George Madison Jr., a pastor and firefighter, was riding his bike when he noticed a cop car pull up in an intersection. Since he knows a lot of police from his work as a firefighter, he thought he recognized one of the officers in the cruiser and offered a friendly wave.

But the officers apparently interpreted this friendly gesture differently. Thinking that Madison had flipped them the bird, they stopped him for questioning. Madison then went to call the police chief, Billy Bolin, who he is acquainted with. But he says the officers told him to hang up his phone and get on the ground. When he hesitated, one officer pulled out his Taser.

“It was literally maybe inches from my face,” Madison said. “I immediately threw my hands in the air. What he asked me to do I was more than willing to do. I said ‘Please don’t hurt me.’

“The next thing I know I’m, laying down the ground and they cuffed me.”

Of course, the cops started to go easy on him when they found out his was a firefighter. But that was after they had nearly tased and cuffed him, so, how exactly could that have gotten any worse?

An internal investigation has been launched, and Chief Bolin told a local news outlet that he knows both Madison and the officers involved. He says he has to “figure out the truth no matter who you like.”

A photo of Madison on the ground was taken by a witness and posted to the pastor’s wall. It went viral, and commenters have suggested that race played a factor (Madison is African American, while the officers are white). Madison himself said on another Facebook post “I don’t think race has anything to do with it,” suggesting that the incident was somehow personal in nature.

Even if he did "give them the bird" why would that facilitate being handcuffed and a taser pointed at you? I thought there was freedom of speech! This was completely uncalled for.

  2. Barbara Baldwin McGinley

These police departments need to screen there employees. Some of them are way out of line, too bad for the decent employees because they all get a bad rap then.

  3. Larry Leker

How could this have been personal if the cops didn't know him? Sounds like Madison is trying to let them off the hook so they don't target him later.

what I going on in our society. I am ready to move to an island out in the south pacific, no telephones, no tv, on newspaper…. just divorce myself from this nonsense. Of course, I can't do that, but I can pray for this suspicious, cynical world that minds and hearts will be softened to be compassionate, and caring human beings.

I wave to cops all the time. Just trying to be friendly. The cop car in question should have a camera which should resolve this situation. Seems some cops are a bit jittery. Let a full investigation begin and thus answer any and all questions. Cool heads need to prevail!

  6. Carroll Blankenship

There are way to many police officers that fly off the handle, and commit crimes on us civilians.Must be a God complex.I have the power over you, and I know how to use it.I have no use for cops.I have never had one help me do anything.

It is definitely without a doubt racism because why would they do that? They should lose there job! That is the reason people hate the cops and cant trust them because they are thugs with a gun and a badge. They are a disgrace to the good cops out there. He was calling the police chief I mean wtf. Why would they want to taser him? What assholes. I think they should apologize to him.. or he should sue.

If the cop had known him it probably wouldn't have happened , so I'm taken the cop didn't know him, The cop still had no right to treat him that way, I was a firefighter at one time and knew some of the cops in our town, the others I didn't know and didn't trust them as far as I could throw them! they aught to shake hands and the cop should apologize , I think it was handled completely wrong, there both professionals , and the cops should act like it! sorry, but I think nowadays MOST cops think they are GOD -O-MIGHTY and their shit don't stink, well, this isn't so!

  9. Don Woolbright

I agree with most of what you said Rose mary Booth except "It is definetly without a doubt rasicm." What proof do you have? What excuse would you say if all the parties were the same color? People like you are race baiters. Anytime something is out of line, people like you look for color? Isn't it possible the cops were just assholes that like to abuse their power, regardless of color? In my mind, your accusations are the type of activity from racists. To me most racistsi seen nowadays are the ones out screaming racists with no evidence. Either you are a racist or one dumb S.O.B.

Race had NOTHING to do with it.. This kinda happened to me.. Back in the 90's, I was driving, WHITE boyfriend in passenger seat, and my two kids in the back.. My boyfriend yelled out the window at some guys being harassed by cops, "Your EPIDERMIS is Showing." Half a block up the road, both cops pulled us over, said my boyfriend was screaming obscenities at them.. When we asked WTF was said, they couldn't give us a straight answer.. Their story then changed that my passenger was hanging half way out the window screaming and shouting all kinds of stuff, including obscenities.. Now picture this, a 25 year old WHITE man, weighs OVER 200 lbs, hanging half way out a small window of a 1977 COBRA Mustang II.. We DID tell the officer, MANY times what was said, but I guess he didn't know what an Epidermis was.. He shoulda looked it up before court.. My boyfriend didn't get arrested, but did get a ticket.. When we show up for court, the judge asked what happened.. Cop said his side, then my boyfriend told his side.. When the judge asked what was the "supposed" obscenity, the cops couldn't say.. So the Judge asked my boyfriend what he said, and the judge about died.. He laughed so hard I think he wet himself.. He dismissed the ticket and told the cop to get a dictionary…

Even if he had've "flipped the cops the bird" AND cursed at them, it would have STILL been protected speech under the First Amendment. The cops grossly abused their authority and should be held accountable. Until there's an expectation that (and history of) cops being punished when they act like this, it will continue to happen.

  12. Kathleen Murphy Kineavy

    Typical cops abusing their authority.
They wonder why there NOT trusted.

  13. Julie Yetta Goldberg

I agree with Dan. Why are people so Damn quick to scream 'racism?" Rose Mary Booth, you are an ignorant person. I'm really getting sick and tired of people like you, you don't even know how to spell. Are you stupid or something?

  14. Nancy Whitmire Johnson

Why does power have to go to so many? I think this is disgraceful and they should lose their jobs! Maybe the rest of the cops would think twice before acting like morons!

  15. Barbara Rodriguez

poor man of god this man did not deserve to be treated in this way but with the country becoming the way it is sometime people colors clouds other people judgment I hope these two police officers get a suspension with out pay and my the good lord forgive them as well.

  16. Veneta Britt

Racial or personal, it matters not. If you wave at a cop you get tazed and cuffed? I wave at cops all the time in my small town. Of course I am an older (50's) white woman who walks with the aid of a cane. I ride the bus or get a ride with a friend or catch a bus most places. These cops were doing things wrong and deserve to lose time, benefits or even their jobs for this abuse.

  17. Georgia Devine

I commend this man for all the work he does as a fireman, as a person kids can go to and he is a great influence on them and for saying outright he doesn't believe this is a race issue, and I think the other officers ought to be suspended without pay or fired.

  18. Donnatella SolarStar

When I wave at policemen/women in my neighborhood they either ignore me or stare me down. So I say stuff. They are very hostile and prone to surfing the web while driving and having a beer while on duty. Bunch of morons.

  19. Krista Stephens

Please fire these men. It's so disturbing that those who have sworn to protect us would treat an innocent man like that. I'd feel safer if they were to lose their badge.

  20. Becky Blanton Rogers

abuse of power – plain & simple. It would take a complete idiot to see 2 cops while riding a bike and flip them off and think they won't respond to it? They were bored and wanted something to do regardless of who they hurt – what would have happened if this guy hadn't been a fire fighter and a pastor and a friend of the police chief? He would have been tasered – probably several times and then beaten up while handcuffed! We have all seen this happen way too often anymore. Police seem to think they have endless power to hurt people instead of protecting and serving – they could have gone about that completely different and be courteous about it.

You know shit is getting raggety, when black folks who know darn well it was race related, start agreeing with the whitefolk who tell them it isn't. When it is sooo obvious.

  24. Janet Bowman

Like, As in I totally agree! My nephew quit being a cop because he was more afraid of being shot by his co-workers than the criminals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Angel Dessalines

This could have easily been me as I wave at officers all the time. It's scary to think they would go this far even if the man had indeed flipped them the bird.

  26. Mary Hollingsworth- Lowe

Call me crazy but this could've been diffused with a simple conversation – not involving cuffs and tasers. All the PO had to do was stop and talk to this gentleman. In this case, it could've been rather easy to see he wasn't being disrespected. The Officers should be issuing a public apology for their behavior. By public I mean – THEY SAY IT, in front of cameras and to Mr. Madison's face. Not in a letter and not in a statement read by their Chief or another spokesperson. If they can't tell between a hand wave and the wave with just the middle finger, they need glasses too…I'm so sorry Mr. Madison, you deserved more respect than that. Even on a human level, you deserved better. smh

  27. Mary Hollingsworth- Lowe

I'm with you! People are so quick to hate and judge but when they need compassion they seen perplexed as to why they aren't getting it. There's a lot to be said for The Golden Rule.

  28. Mary Hollingsworth- Lowe

Actually, depending on how the laws are written for the town, it could be something the person could get a ticket for. I'm not saying I agree, but, the way some laws are written in my state, you can get a ticket for some crazy stuff….

  29. Mary Hollingsworth- Lowe

Donna Jorett – they already do that. At least all the dept's in my state do. You also have to see a therapist. I don't think a majority start out like this. But, I do think that as time goes on, some get used to being able to act however, especially if it's been taught to them by superiors. It's sad really bc I know a lot of PO's and ST Trprs and the ones I know are really good guys. They try to be fair and follow the law. A few have even gone pre-law to have a better understanding of the laws they have to enforce. Many of them have taken the Carry/Conceal Classes so they could know all about the new laws. We need more cops like THEM. Then, PO's act like this and the good guys have to deal with it too…..

  30. T Etta Fields

Don Woolbright Yes, it is decidedly possible that the cops were just assholes. But it is also possible that they are racist assholes. But we can all agree that they are assholes. No need for the name calling because you disagree with Rose Mary Booth.

  31. T Etta Fields

Julie Yetta Goldberg, once bitten twice shy. In any event, no need for the name calling. We can't fairly assume that you are "stupid" just because you, Ms Goldberg have a run-on sentence in your post.

  32. Denise Webb

I know I would love to pull this youth pastor over if he is single, because he is fine!

  33. Xavier Cabrera

T Etta Fields You also cant say race had something to do with it. You're going from A-R without proof. One thing for sure it seems, in my opinion, this Police officer acted out of line from the little I know about this incident. If he did not have any reason to stop this man, the officer should at the very least be suspended without pay for a long time. if not fired. Even if he did flip him the bird, which I doubt, he should be suspended.

  34. David Pernell

He's sayings it personal because the officer felt offended in what Madison did and not discriminated against him by profiling etc..

  35. Robert Horton

Whut threat does a guy on a bike pose, knowing he can't outrun them in their police car, it just don't add up! Abuse of power!
