Stephen Colbert Takes On Gay Mayor Johnny Cummings In ‘People Who Are Destroying America’ Segment

Stephen Colbert premiered the latest addition to his “People Who Are Destroying America” segments on last night’s The Colbert Report, and it has already been labelled one of the greatest pieces to ever air on the show.

Colbert introduced those watching to Johnny Cummings, the openly gay mayor of Vicco, Kentucky, who is also a part-time hairdresser.

In classic Colbert style, the segment is hilarious, emotional, and even heart-breaking, with the show’s host attempting to prove that the residents of Vicco are in fact “simple hillfolk” who are appalled by Cummings’ pro-gay agenda.

Earlier this year, Cummings and Vicco passed a city-wide ordinance which banned any discrimination against LGBT residents. In the process, it became the smallest city in the United States of America to do so.

Cummings has admitted that he has now had five mayors from various other small towns approach him to ask for his assistance in passing the ordinance.

The piece is filled with humorous moments, but the last few seconds of the segment are incredibly emotional as an older member of Vicco, voices his thoughts on the new policy.

The unnamed man, states in his Southern drawl, “God…. makes ‘em born gay, now why is anybody against it? And if he’s against it, then why did he make them born that way? I can’t understand that, I’ve tried and tried to understand that and I cant.” You can watch the clip above.

The Colbert Report was recently involved in a hilarious dispute with the French pop act, Daft Punk.

Colbert explained the situation on the episode that they were supposed to be appear on, stating, “Here’s the story: it’s a true story. We booked click and clack over here about a month ago. This network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV.”

He then added, “Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don’t tell anyone, because fun fact: no one told me until two hours ago.”
