Darren Young’s WWE Future: Wrestling Org ‘Proud’

WWE star Darren Young’s coming out today as the first major wrestler to be openly gay seems to be just one more indication that homophobia is becoming a thing of the past in America.

It all started when Darren Young talked about being a WWE wrestler and being gay off the cuff to TMZ, and he said to a TMZ reporter when asked whether someone can be successful in professional wrestling and still be openly homosexual:

“Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

It’s funny, because gay totally used to mean happy. Anyway.

So Darren Young came out as gay, and the WWE? Well, the organization has no problem with it. In fact?

They went on Facebook, telling fans that WWE “is proud to support Darren Young who revealed to TMZ this morning that he is gay.”

The post linked to a statement, which read:

“On TMZ this morning, WWE Superstar Darren Young revealed to the WWE Universe that he is gay. WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar.”

The wrestling statement continues:

“Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”

Are you surprised at WWE’s pride on the subject of Darren Young’s coming out, or do we need more visibly gay athletes?
