Oscar Pistorius Investigation Finished, Indictment Likely Next Week

The Oscar Pistorius investigation has been completed by South African authorities, and “Blade Runner” is expected to be indicted by early next week.

According to police spokesman Lt. Gen. Solomon Makgale, Pistorius has a charge to answer.

“We are confident based on what we have on the table that justice will be done and that the accused, Mr. Oscar Pistorius, indeed has a case to answer to.” Makhale told South Africa’s eNCA news channel. “What is needed now is for the court process to unfold, but we remain hopeful that in the end we will demonstrate that there was a lot of good work go into the investigation and that justice will be served.”

Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee and 2012 London Olympics competitor, faces allegations that he shot and killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home on February 14.

In February, the sprinter was released on bail. Pistorius claims to have accidentally shot Steenkamp in the early morning hour. The Olympian says he accidentally mistook his girlfriend for an intruder.

The police investigation suggests that Pistorius and Steenkamp had been arguing before the Olympian shot her.

If found guilty for Steenkamp’s murder, the sprinter could face 25 years to life in prison.

Oscar Pistorius is due back in court on Monday. Officials could choose to indict the runner at that time.

Once indicted, officials are expected to setup a trial for the near future.

Because of the ongoing investigation, Oscar Pistorius has been holed up at a relative’s house in South Africa. In the meantime, 6,000 miles away from his location the World Championships are well underway in Russia. Had he not been under investigation, Pistorius would be competing in the 400 meters event.

Given the confidence for which South African officials announced the end to their investigation, it is likely that Oscar Pistorius will face trial by April 2014.
