‘2 Guns’ Earns Around $1.3 Million On Thursday

The Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg action flick 2 Guns snagged approximately $1.3 million during late evening and midnight showings on Thursday.

Contraband director Baltasar Kormakur’s latest big-screen effort may not have set the box office ablaze last night, but the film is still on-track to put quite a few bullet holes in The Smurfs 2. Analysts believe the flick will rise to the top of the box office over the next three days.

2 Guns is expected to bring in around $30 million by the time everyone heads back to work on Monday. The Smurfs 2, meanwhile, is predicted to make considerably less; the film’s five-day total should stall out at approximately $35 million.

While industry insiders seem to think that Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are poised to storm the box office this weekend, the film didn’t get the strongest reviews head of its release. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is currently perched at 60 percent.

What should prospective moviegoers expect from Hollywood’s latest R-rated action opus? According to New York Post critic Kyle Smith, audiences should prepare for a fair amount of bloodshed.

“Just go ahead and assume that everybody is trying to kill everybody and you’ll be relatively clear,” Smith wrote.

If Sony Picture is sweating 2 Guns this weekend, then they certainly aren’t showing it. The Smurfs 2 may not end up being the biggest domestic money maker in its stable, but the studio is anticipating strong returns from foreign markets this weekend.

The first Smurfs adventure managed to snag $142 million in North America during its theatrical run. However, the film’s foreign total stopped ticking at $421 million. Needless to say the US really isn’t the target audience for these family-friendly flicks.

Depending on what moviegoers are in the mood for this weekend, Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold’s The Wolverine could end up giving these new releases a run for their money. The superhero epic continued to do a considerable amount of business on Thursday.
