California Riots Illustrate Endemic White Violence, Gawker Hilariously Observes

Riots over the weekend in California (also called a “beach disturbance” in some news reports) were not the type of unrest we’ve been talking about in recent weeks — plainly, because it involved white people.

The surf competition riots in Huntington Beach were violent, destructive, and expensive — and white. One local business owner described “standing his ground” while white people went HAM on the area, trying to destroy an expensive window display:

“We were just trying to push people back, just to try to save the shop from people getting in and taking over the shop. You have to stand your ground sometimes… We saw some of the locals coming out of the crowd to line up around the shop and tell people to get back. It made me feel better when I was standing up in the window. It’s good to know we have a strong sense of community around here.”

Cops in California say they’re combing through the mean streets of Facebook in order to catch the perps, but no press conferences were held about “zero tolerance” threats and no media scaremongering about the percolating anger of white America was observed.

That prompted Gawker to ask the question of why the media and white leaders refuse to address head on the issues of white on white violence and the poor parenting involved leading to such callous displays of moral disinterest.

In a post titled Video of Violent, Rioting Surfers Shows White Culture of Lawlessness, the blog engages in a wonderfully illustrative bit of stereotype reversal, and in the process, shows how even the most benign or obvious sounding “objections” to black riot scaremongering after the Trayvon Martin verdict sound ludicrous when flipped to an obvious counternarrative.

Writer Cord Jefferson hits lots of common and false conclusions in the piece, with some standout lines serving as the perfect encapsulation of a media double standard:

“… it was a reminder that we must begin to seriously consider the values of our thuggish white youth… many people don’t want to hear this kind of tough love, of course. They’d like to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that all white children are as sweet and harmless as Taylor Swift.”

Jefferson continues:

“… the reality is that the statistics tell a different story. For instance, according to research from the Department of Justice, 84 percent of white murder victims are killed by other white people. Similarly, white rape victims tend to be raped by other whites. White-on-white violence is a menace to white communities across the country, and yet you never hear white leaders like Pastor Joel Osteen, Bill O’Reilly, or Hillary Clinton take a firm stance against the scourge.”

The writer, of course, cites these claims with actual, real statistics. Turning to careless white parents of rioting children and young adults, he asks:

“When did so many white parents fall asleep at the wheel? You can complain about poor schools all you’d like, but the fact of the matter is that it’s the parents of these children who are letting them leave the house looking like slobs in their baggy board shorts and Hollister t-shirts.”

He concludes, apologizing for the harsh truths and saying:

“… as an American of color who considers himself an ally to the white community, I’m just tired of seeing young, belligerent white people disgrace themselves year after year at surfing events, horse racing infields, and Ivy League campuses… How long must we wait for the white community to get its act together?”
