Ashanti Stalker Indicted In New York City

The man accused of sending Ashanti a series of sexually graphic messages was recently indicted in New York City.

The singer and Army Wives star was on-hand to testify against 35-year-old Devar Hurd. Prosecutors said the former fitness trainer and sound technician faces charges of stalking, harassment, and criminal contempt.

Ashanti reportedly told the grand jury that she received over 100 tweets from Hurd since September of 2012. The TV star explained that she felt threatened by Hurd’s unsavory behavior. According to the singer, she was pleased with the results of her testimony.

“Pretty good! It went good!” she told reporters outside of the District Attorney’s office.

Hurd was indicted in Supreme Court in Manhattan on Friday. Prosecutors explained that the 35-year-old violated an order of protection by sending the messages to the R&B singer. Hurd’s attorney has yet to respond to the charges.

This isn’t the first time the former fitness trainer has gotten in serious trouble for sending unwanted messages to the singer or someone in her family. Hurd was previously sentenced to two years in jail for sending a series of nasty comments to Ashanti’s mother. It would appear that he didn’t learn his lesson the first time around.

According to the New York Daily News, Hurd was in contact with Ashanti as recently as last weekend. In a tweet to the singer earlier this month, he even made reference to the case.

“Yeah, it’s me, the falsely accused stalker,” he wrote.

The sound technician’s obsession with the singer reportedly began after the two made eye contact during a show in Chicago back in 2010.

Hurd’s bail was set at $750,000. He remains in custody as of this writing. Reports suggest that he will be arraigned at some point next month.
