Chicago Bears turn to Todd Collins

A lot of us have been waiting for the wheels to come off the Chicago Bears season. It seems that they played way over the heads and were an unreal 3-0. Of course one of those victories wasn’t a real one since teh zebras gave it to them (yes I am a Detroit Lions fan, and yes I am still bitter about that call). After taking a beating deliver by the New York Giants defense, QB Jay Cutler sustained a concussion and may be done for a long time as the NFL is taking this type of injury very seriously.

Now the Bears have to turn to the anything but young QB Todd Collins. I don’t want to say that Todd Collins is over the hill at 40, but I can say maybe he never made it up the NFL hill. Since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 1995 draft Todd has never really made his mark at the NFL level. Sure he had one pretty good season with the Washington Redskins, but now the Bears season is in his hands.

Now Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz has a lot of work to do. Even with Cutler healthy this was just the 17th ranked team in terms of passing yards with 228 passing yards per game. Worse than that the Bears rank just 31st in rushing yards per game with just 68.8. I don’t trust the Martz offensive system in the hands of Collins, and Bears fans have every reason to be very nervous.

Of course there is an upside here. The Bear’s next four games are against the Panthers, Seahawks, Redskins, and Bills. That is a pretty easy schedule for any QB, and if they can run the table they would be sitting very pretty at 7-1. They also get a bye week in there so when the tough schedule returns hopefully Cutler is back.
