‘Pacific Rim’: Guillermo Del Toro Continues To Talk Sequel

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro continues to discuss what he wants to do with the film’s sequel. However, it’s unclear if the folks at Warner Bros. are moving forward with a follow-up.

Despite the movie’s lackluster performance at the box office, the acclaimed filmmaker is still kicking around ideas for Pacific Rim 2.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, then you might want to steer clear of del Toro’s comments. They might spoil some of the movie’s numerous surprises.

“I’ll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you’re gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special,” the director explained to MTV News.

He continued, “Just think about it for a second. We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there. We’ve drifted with a Kaiju brain. Well, then start riffing on that and you’ll get to something.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Pacific Rim 2, rumor has it scribe Travis Beacham is currently pounding out a script just in case the studio decides to give the project a greenlight. Should the film continue to do strong business overseas, a sequel could happen.

Unfortunately for Warner Bros. and Guillermo del Toro, the film has performed as expected. The movie has only generated around $70 million in the US as of this writing. However, the film’s foreign totals are a little stronger. The sci-fi flick has generated around $110 million in ticket sales overseas.

The $190 million production still has a ways to go before it starts making money for the studio. However, the film could end up making quite a bit of money when it debuts on Blu-ray and DVD. Fans shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a follow-up just yet.
