Drumming Grandma Video Hits The Right Note, Gains Two Million Views

A video of a “mystery drumming grandma” went viral over the weekend as it racked up more than two million views. Well, the identity of the mystery woman has been solved.

According to WKBT, the drumming grandma’s name is Mary Hvizda. She lives in Onalaska and filmed her viral video at a drum shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The news station caught up with Hvizda to find out a little bit about her drumming history. Hvizda said that she started playing the drums at the age of 15 when her brother got his own set.

Hvizda, now 63, said: “He was a drummer and I thought I’d really love to play and drum, and that was my chance.”

Hvizda played in bands like the Chantells and On The Road Again, but she hung up her sticks in the 1990s. Hvizda still plays from time to time at the local drum shop, but she hasn’t played in a band since On The Road Again broke up.

Hvizda told ABC: “I still kind of like to go to the music store and play a drum set, and then that’s it… My music urge has been satisfied.”

But that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t like her new found fame. Hvizda was flattered to see so many people tuning in to watch her YouTube video.

She said: “It makes me proud to think that people still think I’m somewhat good and still think I’m still something they’re interested in watching.”

Hvizda added that she could do without the “drumming grandma” nickname. You know, since she’s not even a grandma.
