‘The Conjuring’ Tops The Weekend Box Office

James Wan’s The Conjuring topped the weekend box office.

The low-budget horror flick scared the cinematic pants off its big-budget competition this weekend by snagging an impressive $41.5 million from moviegoers.

According to Forbes, The Conjuring enjoyed one of the best opening weekend totals for an R-rated horror movie in history. The flick trails both Paranormal Activity 3 and Hannibal in ticket sales.

Based on the true adventures of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film follows the couple as they help a family deal with the supernatural shenanigans unfolding inside their secluded farmhouse.

The Inquisitr previously reported that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. were already discussing a sequel ahead of the film’s release. Considering the movie only cost around $20 million to produce, it’s safe to say that the studio will move forward with a follow-up.

“We have Lorraine’s permission and support, and we are working on developing another film. Horror is very much a part of the DNA of New Line. This is as good a horror movie as we’ve ever made,” New Line president Tobey Emmerich recently explained.

Unfortunately for the other films that opened this weekend, none of them were nearly as successful as The Conjuring. Reuters reports that the DreamWorks Animation flick Turbo landed in third place with around $21.5 million in receipts.

Universal Pictures experienced its first major flop of the summer with the Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds action flick R.I.P.D.. The $130 million adventure generated only $13 million over the weekend. The studio has a very long way to go before it can even dream of breaking even on this one.

The star-studded sequel Red 2 also failed to generate a substantial amount of money from moviegoers. The follow-up to the 2010 Bruce Willis actioner only made approximately $19 million at the box office. It remains to be seen if Lionsgate and Summit will move forward with Red 3.

Here’s a list of this weekend’s top 10.

1. The Conjuring – $41.5 million
2. Despicable Me 2 – $25 million
3. Turbo – $21.5 million
4. Grown Ups 2 – $20 million
