2010 Toronto Maple Leafs Preview

The bad news for the Toronto Maple Leafs is they finished 29th a year ago in the standings. The new defensemen Dion Phaneuf told General Manger Brian Burke that they needed bigger forwards, and that was what Burke went after all summer. They have added a lot of grit, determination, and even brawn to the lineup for the coming NHL season. Hopefully this influx of talent will help get this franchise back on track. If not they may be looking for a new Head Coach sooner rather than later.

Ron Wilson is that coach and is halfway through a four year deal to mange the team. So far he has yet to deliver, with his overall record being 64-73-27 with the Leafs. He and GM Burke have a similar physical intimidating style, but that system has yet to bring about any real on the ice success. It may be a personnel issue, and some of that may now be fixed. However this is a team that seems to have lost its way and that has to be blamed on the coach.

This team’s breakout candidate is Center Mikhail Grabovski. He broke he wrist last March and that may have cost him a second straight 20 goal season. Since he is only 26 he still has some time to prove that he can be a dominating offensive player.
