The sequel to the SpongeBob SquarePants movie will begin filming in Georgia later this year.
The follow-up to Nickelodeon’s hit 2004 animated comedy will soon begin rolling in Savannah. Reports suggest the live-action portions of the film will shoot in the area for around three months.
The City of Savannah Film Office announced on Thursday (June 12) that the SpongeBob SquarePants sequel is slated to begin filming in the next few weeks. According to WJCL, the proposed follow-up shoot in and around Savannah, Georgia during September, October, and November.
“SpongeBob is a very successful international franchise and we are very excited to be working with Paramount on this project. This is a good fit for us and them. We know from experience how valuable the investment and exposure generated by a project like this can be for our community,” City of Savannah Film Services Director Jay Self said.
Coming Soon is reporting that several of the main SpongeBob SquarePants cast members will return for the upcoming sequel. Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Clancy Brown, and Carolyn Lawrence are all currently slated to reprise their respective roles.
Nickelodeon’s animated series is presently in its ninth season. According to SpongeBob Wikia, the 10th season of the iconic show will return at some point next year. The website also claims the follow-up should arrive in theaters in November of 2014. An official release date has not been set.
Directors Stephen Hillenburg and Mark Osborne’s SponeBob SquarePants Movie was a modest hit for the folks at Paramount back in 2004. The $30 million comedy earned around $85 million during its theatrical run in North America. The picture’s worldwide total currently stands at an impressive $140 million.
One can only hope that the filmmakers manage to find a way to work David Hasselhoff into the next movie. His segment in the original flick is easily one of the most memorable. If you missed out on this sequence, then you can check out it out below.
