Angry Trayvon App Removed By Google Play

The Angry Trayvon app was removed from Google Play following continued controversy. The mobile game was criticized as glorifying the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman last year. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain controversial as Martin was under the age of 18 and unarmed. Zimmerman contends that he killed Martin in self-defense.

As Zimmerman’s criminal trial continues, a new controversy has developed around a mobile app. As reported by CBS News, the Angry Trayvon app featured an “angry” character wearing a hoodie and carrying a weapon. The character’s goal was to forge a “world tour of revenge on the bad guys …”

A petition, appearing at Change.org, requested removal of the game from the app store. The petition explains that the game is disrespectful and exploits Martin’s death:

“This application unnecessarily promotes violence and exploits the unfortunate death of Trayvon Martin … The death of this young man is NOT A GAME … we are asking that this application be moved from the Google Play marketplace immediately.”

Although the petition received fewer than 200 signatures, the Angry Trayvon app is no longer available through Google Play. As reported by FastCompany.com, the game was pulled by the developers.

Trade Digital developed the app, selling it on Google Play for $1.99 per download. Add-ons were available for an extra fee.

The Angry Trayvon Facebook page, which has since been removed, contained a statement about the game’s removal. The developers explained that the game was not meant to be racist. However, it was removed from the app store due to numerous complaints about the content.

Some sources, including Fast Company, have stated that the game eventually reappeared in the Google Play store. However, neither the Facebook page nor the app are not available at this time.

The Angry Trayvon app may not have been intentionally racist. However, many feel that it was in bad taste.
