‘Hellboy 3’: Guillermo Del Toro Says Another Sequel Is ‘Very Unlikely’

Will Hellboy 3 ever find its way to the big screen? According to director Guillermo del Toro, another installment of the beloved franchise is “very unlikely.”

Although the filmmaker said earlier this month that the series could find a new home over at Legendary Pictures, del Toro believes it’s “very unlikely” the project will ever get off the ground. From the way he talks, making another movie would be more trouble than it’s worth.

The Pacific Rim director explained to Collider:

It’s very unlikely it’ll happen because you need things to converge so strongly. [Producer] Larry Gordon, Universal, the rights, Ron [Perlman’s] and mine’s availability, [comic creator] Mike [Mingola’s] blessing; we have pieces of that, but we don’t have all of that. You need so many things to confluence and then you need about $150 million.

Guillermo del Toro said Hellboy 2 wasn’t a big enough success at the box office to warrant a larger budget. In order to make the sort of movie fans are expecting, he would need close to $200 million. That’s definitely a lot of money for a franchise with limited appeal.

During his chat with Shock Till You Drop not too long ago, the filmmaker suggested there was interest in Hellboy 3 at Legendary. While he didn’t say the sequel was moving forward, it certainly gave fans hope for the future of the series.

“Last night, we were at dinner and Ron said, ‘I would be very happy to do ‘Hellboy’ again, when are we doing ‘Hellboy 3?’ Thomas [Tull] said, ‘I would love to see Hellboy 3.’ He didn’t say he would love to do it he just said he’d like to see it, but today, I’ll ask him,” del Toro said.

For the moment, all eyes are on the director’s latest effort Pacific Rim. Should the movie fail to find an audience in theaters this weekend, the chance of another Hellboy movie will likely decrease further. Fingers crossed that the filmmaker’s monster movie is a huge success.
