What’s Next For Wimbledon Champ Andy Murray?

Andy Murray became Wimbledon champion on Sunday by defeating No.1 seed Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.

So what’s next for the Scottish player who became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years?

At a press conference the day after his epic feat Murray still seemed to be in a daze.

Asked about whether he should receive a knighthood for his accomplishment he said,

“I don’t really know,” he said Monday. “I mean, it’s a nice thing to have, or be offered. I think just because everyone’s waited for such a long, long time for this, that’s probably why it would be suggested. But I don’t know if it merits that.”

What surely awaits Murray is a plethora of sponsorships and endorsement deals that could make him a millionaire.

According to Nigel Currie, director of sports marketing agency brandRapport, the Scot could double his off-court earnings to about $22.5 million per year.

Andy Murray face was in almost every single front page publication around Great Britain. After all they have waited for this for 77 years and he came so close to winning it all last year.

Only twelve months ago he was 0-4 in major finals by losing to Roger Federer. He continued with his training and had his revenge when he beat the Swiss player to win the Gold Medal for England in the London Summer Olympics last year.

The 26-year-old Scot attended the All England Club champions dinner Sunday night only to wake up a few hours later to do press rounds. He also got several pictures taken alongside Fred Perry’s statue, the last British man to win Wimbledon.

Murray says he is planning to take a vacation before starting training for the US Open in which he will be the defending champion.

“I just need to make sure I don’t get sidetracked by anything. And after the next few days, yeah, enjoy it and celebrate and stuff, but go away, rest up and get ready for the U.S. Open,” he said. “Because I’ve never had to defend a Grand Slam before. That will be a new experience for me, and I look forward to that.”

Things are finally looking up for the dedicated Brit and he can enjoy the fruits of his hard work for a little while at least before getting back to work.
