A healthy sex life can make you look younger, according to a new study by Dr. David Weeks. The former head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital suggest that a healthy sex life is particularly important as we grow older.
According to Dr. Weeks, a healthy sex life can make men and women look five and seven years younger. Regular sex causes the release of endorphins which act as a natural painkiller while reducing anxiety. With less anxiety, we sleep better. Sex also offers a form of exercise that boosts circulation, which helps the heart. A healthy sex life also causes the human growth hormone to be released, which makes skin look more elastic.
Dr. Weeks says of the idea behind a healthy sex life:
“The stereotype of an elderly person is that when they get their pension and bus pass, they stop having sex and that’s not true. Sexual satisfaction is a major contributor to quality of life, ranking at least as high as spiritual or religious commitment and other morale factors, so more positive attitudes towards mature sex should be vigorously promoted.”
In terms of sex at a later stage in life, Dr. Weeks reveals: “Sexuality is definitely not the prerogative of younger people and nor should it be.”
Dr. Weeks came to his findings by questioning various men and women about their sex lives. The study found that people who looked younger than their age had sex 50 percent more than people of similar age. The study found that people who looked younger in their 40s and 50s had sex on average three times per week compared to “older looking” people who had sex just twice a week.
The doctor feels so sure about his healthy sex life approach to looking young that he is preparing to speak about his findings at a British Psychological Society conference today.
Recent studies have also found that people who have sex more often live longer lives.
