‘Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns XIII’ Trailer Reveals Story Details [Video]

A new trailer for Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns XIII reveals story details!

You almost can’t talk about role-playing video games without mentioning Final Fantasy. Alongside Ultima, Final Fantasy has been around practically since the beginning of console role playing. The series has borrowed heavily from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books in terms of characters, but then again, who hasn’t?

Final Fantasy always starts you out with a fighter, a black mage, a white mage, and whatever other character class you decide to add, though in earlier installments it was possible (but extremely difficult) to get through the game with a deviation on the formula. The fighter always uses swords, the black mage always uses harmful magic, and the white mage always heals and protects the party. It’s a combination that never seems to fail in any situation.

In Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns XIII, the main character deviates from the previous norm in that Lightning is a woman. She has been granted a new quest to save as many people as possible before the world ends in 13 days, and it is yet unknown if the god she claims to work for is related to Etro, the goddess of time and death from the previous games in Final Fantasy‘s Lightning trilogy.

The trailer for Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns XIII begins with Lightning standing in a field of darkness as she says, “One day, the light touched me. I knew what it was. It was God himself speaking to me. He told me what I had to do. I was chosen to rescue lost souls and guide them past the end of this world, and into the next. I became the savior.”

A guy pipes in after this, “The gates are open and chaos is flooding through, consuming the world and everything in it. Not even God can stop it.”

A young girl then adds, “The people who died in the past are going to be erased forever, like they never existed.”

The rest of the trailer is above.

Pre-orders of Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns XIII will get you access to Cloud Strife’s outfit and sword from Final Fantasy VII.
