Jeff Withey Has Bill Self’s Support After NBA Draft Results

Jeff Withey and Ben McLemore were both picked up in the NBA Draft last week and their former coach at Kansas is proud of his players. Bill Self has maintained one of the best college basketball programs in the nation over the years and his players regularly are first-round draft picks.

McLemore fell to No. 7 overall to the Sacramento Kings while Withey didn’t get picked in the first round. He eventually went to the Portland Trail Blazers at No. 39 and his former college coach was in attendance to watch his players move on to the NBA.

“I wish they both would’ve gone higher,” Self said, according to the Kansas City Star. “I was hoping Ben would’ve gone in the top four and was hoping Jeff would make it in the first round, but those things can happen. I actually like the teams they went to. I think they’re both great opportunities for both of those guys.”

Jeff Withey wasn’t the hottest prospect going into the draft, but his work ethic and size made him a great pick for any team. A first-round spot would’ve been ideal for the 23-year-old, but he’ll take a move to Portland nonetheless.

“I’ve talked to both of them a lot and I know that Jeff is excited,” Self added. “He said he’s more motivated now than ever and Ben, I was with him and his family. They were just soaking in the moment and were so proud. It was a good night for Kansas.”

A good night indeed, but it wasn’t unusual for former Kansas’ stars to go early in the draft. Last year, Thomas Robinson went fifth overall to the Kings before being traded to the Rockets mid-way through the season.

The All-American with the Jayhawks is now settling into the NBA and both Withey and McLemore will look to do the same once they join their teams.

Do you think Jeff Withey will be a solid player at the NBA level?
