‘Metal Gear Solid 3’ A Good Entry Point For Newcomers, Says Kojima

Interested in checking out the Metal Gear Solid franchise after all of the excitement surrounding the Metal Gear Solid V trailer from E3? If so, series creator Hideo Kojima says that you might be better off starting with the third game rather than the first.

The reason, Kojima explained by way of Twitter, is that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater simply controls a lot better than the first two games, which he described as featuring a “birds-eye view” camera. Admittedly, the camera angles in the first two games didn’t always work very well.

“I often get asked ‘which title one should play if haven’t [played] MGS series?’,” Kojima wrote in the tweet (via Siliconera. “Play MGS3 as [the] control is more modern, if you liked it then MGS4.”

Newcomers to the series will be able to play all games in the Metal Gear franchise by way of Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection, which releases on PlayStation 3 on July 4 for $49.99.

Even though the Legacy Collection includes the first two games as well, Kojima suggests skipping them – unless you can deal with outdated control schemes, that is.

“When the concept of Legacy Collection was brought [during a meeting], [the developer] side stated that it’d be hard for current user to play MGS1,” Kojima said in another tweet. “Since it’s bird-eye view, you can’t really see the front side which makes it hard to self-adjust for someone accustomed to FPS/TPS.”

In addition to including all four Metal Gear Solid games (as well as Peace Walker), the bundle also includes two MSX versions of the Metal Gear games that started it all over two decades ago along with two digital graphic novels by Ashley Wood.
