‘Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon’ Sells 500,000 Copies In Just Two Months

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon proved to be a lot more popular than the folks at Ubisoft had anticipated.

The spin-off of the hit first-person adventure Far Cry 3 has sold an impressive 500,000 copies in just two months time. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said he was very pleased with the success of Blood Dragon. He said the game has surpassed company expectations.

“It gives all the industry better visibility on what’s happening. And not just the industry, but all the supporters of the industry and the financial community, as well. So we need to have more information to help the industry continue to grow,” Guillemot explained to Games Industry International.

He added, “When you can, you keep all your secrets. Everybody feels that if the other guys knew where they were getting their money from, competitors would jump on that. Which is true. But what we’ve seen is that very often, if you receive as much information as you give, it’s not negative.”

Now that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has been declared a success by the folks at Ubisoft, does this mean fans can expect a sequel at some point down the road? There’s no official word from the company just yet, but creative director Dean Evans seems excited about the idea of creating more adventures in the Blood Dragon universe.

“It would be amazing, I’d love to do more of this s***,” Evans told Shacknews. “If people like this game and what it’s about, send a postcard [to Ubisoft]. [The sequel has] nothing to do with me. I’m just a creative director.”

Evans told the website his the team was heavily inspired by such over-the-top sequels as Rambo 3 and Robocop 3. Instead of aiming for something serious and realistic, the developers pieced Blood Dragon together by mining the bottom of the cinematic barrel. The end result is nostalgic bliss.

“Let’s look at it like a movie franchise that has jumped the shark and has gone absolutely mental. The game’s pretty stupid and that’s fine, because we’re in the video games business and it’s okay to be stupid sometimes,” the creative director said.
