Jay-Z Allowed To Use Nirvana Lyrics, Says Courtney Love

Jay-Z was recently granted permission to use lyrics from a Nirvana song by Courtney Love.

The former Hole frontwoman recently revealed the rapper used a few lyrics written by the late Kurt Cobain in a song on his upcoming album. Although he didn’t originally receive permission to use them, Love apparently isn’t holding a grudge.

“They [used it] without asking, which is kind of nervy but the business side has been taken care of so it’s fine,” Courtney Love explained to The Huffington Post.

She added, “I’m letting Jay-Z use lyrics — Frances would freak [if she knew this]. Jay-Z’s huge and we’re friends. I mean we’re not besties or anything.”

Courtney Love didn’t immediately indicate which lyrics Jay-Z borrowed for one of his upcoming tunes. However, those who downloaded the Samsung Galaxy app were made aware of the new song on Monday. In addition to announcing his collaboration with Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z also released a lyric sheet for the song “Holy Grail.”

According to Perez Hilton, the song in question contains lyrics from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The tune will be featured on Jay-Z’s upcoming album Magna Carta Holy Grail.

The song’s chorus includes the lyrics: “And we all just / entertainers / and we’re stupid / and contagious.”

Those who downloaded the app will be able to snag Jay-Z’s new album days before it hits retail. The rapper’s new collection of tunes is slated to arrive on retail shelves on July 4. Judging from the release date, Jay-Z wants to make the album’s release a huge event.
