Utah boycott being organized by Proposition 8 opponents

Posted: November 8, 2008

Bloggers are calling for a complete boycott of the state of Utah over the Mormon Church’s support for Proposition 8.

According to some reports prior to the election, the Mormon Church directly, or via its members contributed to 40% of the yes campaign’s budget, and the church encouraged members to flood into California to spread the Yes case.

Utah is the headquarters for the Mormon Church and around two thirds of the state belong to the church. Utah’s tourism industry delivers $6 billion to the local economy, through ski fields, “red rock country” and the Sundance Film Festival.

The Church is naturally playing the hate card, saying that it is “disturbing” that the church is being singled out for exercising its right to speak up in a free election, and that “it is wrong to target the Church and its sacred places of worship for being part of the democratic process.” A Church spokesman went on to say that “no one on any side of the question should be vilified, intimidated, harassed or subject to erroneous information.”

In 1998, Mormons donate 500 of the $600,000 to defeat gay rights and instill discrimination in Alaska. Regarding a boycott. Bring it.

Yet at the same time the largest contributor to the “No” campaign lives in Utah, and the largest contributor to the “Yes” campaign was Catholic. Where are the lists of Utahns and Mormons that voted and contributed against Prop 8?

  3. Lots of churches and other groups supported proposition 8. It seems odd that the Mormon Church is being singled out as a scapegoat. The church didn't even directly participate, it just encouraged its members to do so on their own accord.

Apparently the mormons, and others, were more passionate and generous in favor of Prop 8 than the GLBT community was against it.

Rather than act childishly about the results of the vote, the GLBT should reflect on what they did wrong, and try to perform better in the future. Their behavior in the wake of this vote will certainly backfire.

Nick, I agree – in fact, the no on 8 campaign had a significant amount more contributions than the yes on 8 campaign. If anyone should have won it was the no on 8 campaign, so long as we're blaming people for contributions only.

  5. Didn't 52% of CALIFORNIANS vote for Prop 8? A few Mormons in Utah supporting it seems insignificant.

  6. I think it unbelieveable Prop 8 WON… It had big backers from Hollywood and Silicon Valley… In addition, the media especially the Mercury News totally supported the No on 8 . In fact, Wednesday morning was NOT YES ON 8 WINS, rather NO on 8 goes down. It is this Liberal Media that is contributing to the decay in Society..

As a numbers person, it is so hard to comprehend how a small part of the population 3-7% gays scream and yell VICTIM and the Liberal Media joins the cheer for equality. This small group (and I refuse to say minority) are extremely vocal so Politicans are afraid – it is time for people to join together and stand against more Liberals laws that favor IF IT FEELS GOOD = DO IT!!

This I hope is the first of many battles where the people of (different) faith join together for the common good.

There is no list like that, Jesse, because it can't be produced. Nobody wants to admit that, if you step back and look at it, this issue was decided by *people*–on both sides.

But, it's too hard to blame “people”… people vote their opinions. People exercise their rights to freedom of speech and religion. “People” isn't scary enough.

… its easier to blame a so-called outsider religious group supposedly full of zealots and freaks, who are secretly trying to undermine people's rights and take away your freedom to be yourself.

Sounds a lot like the final battle-cry from the McCain camp in this last election… “Don't vote for Obama! Fear, and unknown….. Ayers! Money redistribution! Boogeyman!…”

Marginalize the Mormons… it makes it so much easier to ridicule and abuse them and blame them for something they actually had very little to do with.

Oh, now y'all don't like it when people target a particular group! Should have thought of that before getting yourselves into the civil matters of another state! We do not meddle in your state laws, why the F are you all over ours?! 70% of the total money contributed by your members to Yes on 8, and you're wondering why people are mad at you? Are you not only bigots, but idiots too?! You have spread lies all over our state, and have hurt some of our people! You've laid your bed, now lay in it!

They should have thought of that before they villified me and my family. Now it's time to pay. Funny how they think that they should be treated differently (again).

Go to mormonsfor 8.com to get a complete list of those to boycott.

  10. The Mormon Church is borrowing a rhetorical ploy from the Ku Klux Klan. They are saying that it is intolerant to speak out against intolerance.

  11. There has been talk of trying to get the Sundance Film Festival to move. Please help this succeed. Between gay rights activists boycotting our state and Robert Redford not coming things are really looking up. Thanks for the help in improving the great state of Utah. More room on the slopes is always a good thing for us locals.

  12. Come to Santa Fe, one of the most gay friendly cities in the world.

We got moutains, we got opera, we got skiing, the food us MUCH better, fabulous galleries, it's all good

Stay at my Inn and Cottages http://www.casitas.net

  13. This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. So we are going to boycott everything in Utah (which has many gay people too by the way, but we will boycott them too because they are tied to Utah). What's the logic in that?
