Kim Deal Breaks Up With The Pixies

Kim Deal is leaving influential indie rock band The Pixies, after 27 years as an official band member.

Kim Deal’s tenure with The Pixies has always been subject to band members’ other projects and even a subsequent break up back in 1993, around the time Deal and twin sister Kelley’s band The Breeders hit it big in the 90s alt rock boom with track “Last Splash” off the year’s album of the same name.

Today on Facebook, The Pixies’ official page posted the following message to their fans, signed by the band’s remaining members, leaving the door open to another reunion should Deal decide to rejoin:

“We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”

The post is signed by Pixies bandmates Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering.

Music publication Pitchfork notes that Kim Deal has been busy with other projects recently, and that The Pixies have not performed live in years, saying:

“This adds a whole new chapter onto the Pixies: A Visual History book currently in the works after a successful Kickstarter project. The Pixies have not played live together since November 2011. In recent years, Kim has been touring the 20th anniversary re-release ofthe BreedersLast Splash, releasing a series of solo singles, and collaborating with the National’s Dessner brothers on their Long Count project with her sister, Kelley.”
