Carey Mulligan Turns Down Hillary Clinton Role [Video]

Though actress Carey Mulligan was considered a front-runner for the lead role in a planned biopic about former FLOTUS, Secretary of State, and possible 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, she has turned down the opportunity.

Mulligan has passed on the chance to play Clinton in the upcoming biopic Rodham after meeting with director James Ponsoldt to discuss the role. The 28-year-old has since officially turned down the offer, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Polsoldt is directing Rodham based on a script written by Young Il Kim, and is considering other big-name actresses for the part of Hillary Clinton.

Among the front-runners sans-Mulligan are: Scarlett Johansson, Amanda Seyfried and Reese Witherspoon. Jessica Chastain was rumored for the role as well, but she denied reports that she was being considered earlier this month.

“No, that’s actually not true. I found out about the project online, but, yeah, there’s a lot of stuff out there,” Chastain said.

Ponsoldt seems to have that rare problem wherein has a lot of talented actresses to choose from, but that in and of itself makes it hard to pick the right one.

“They’re all wonderful actresses,” he said. “We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We’re in an enviable position.”

Jennifer Lawrence was also reportedly attached to the role, but she said that she was too busy to commit. Come on, we all love Jennifer Lawrence, but we can’t just have her play everybody.

What do you think of Carey Mulligan’s choice to turn down the role of Hillary Clinton for Rodham? Who do you think should play the former First Lady?
