Airport Explosion Likely Caused By Power Unit Malfunction

The airport explosion on Tuesday morning led to an evacuation of Concourse D at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. The incident led to a power outage and airport officials have now released that the likely cause behind the explosion was a malfunctioning power supply unit.

According to The Associated Press, airport spokesman Reese McCranie said a unit that supplies power mostly to the air conditioning system at Concourse D malfunctioned which led to the incident. Officials also noted that there was some property damage from the maintenance shed blast.

The Inquistr previously reported that the incident occurred around 9 am near Gate D-21 before visitors were evacuated from the area. The brief evacuation caused quite the stir as many aircraft were reassigned to different gates while passengers waited out the delay.

Authorities have revealed that no one was injured due to the electrical blast and that there also was no fire or smoke of any kind inside the concourse area. McCranie went on to describe the incident as “minor property damage,” though the airport explosion caused delays for multiple flights.

Hartsfield-Jackson Airport delayed around 35 flights due to the blast, according to officials. Shortly after it was all said and done, McCranie tweeted out that operations had resumed. You can see his tweet below.

The brief power outage was enough to evacuate the concourse, but authorities worked quickly to identify the cause and get services back up and running at the popular airport. The flights that were delayed quickly got back on schedule, as McCranie noted that their departures were pushed back by an average of 20 or 30 minutes.

The all-clear to resume full services and operations was given shortly after 10 am, according to the New York Daily News. Can you think of another incident that’s similar to the airport explosion at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport?
