Florida Sinkhole Swallows Swimming Pool (On Owner’s Birthday)

Orange County, FL – A sinkhole swallowed a Florida woman’s swimming pool, and it couldn’t have happened on a better day: Her birthday.

The Florida sinkhole claimed not just the swimming pool but also a large portion of Suzanne Blumenauer’s backyard Monday night. Officials said that the sinkhole was 50 to 50 feet wide and 30 to 40 feet deep. Blumenauer returned from dinner to find half of her backyard gone and decided to move out for the night.

She said that she had a pool party on Sunday and everything was fine.

The edge of the hole was 20 feet from the back door, with Blumenauer deciding to stay with a friend in case the sinkhole spread. Officials do not yet know if her house is safe, and another property behind her lot could be threatened too.

“You wonder how big it will eventually get,” said Jim Frank, a new resident to the neighborhood.

Though a county geologist is expected to examine the new Florida sinkhole and swimming pool on Tuesday, neighbors are already speculating as to the cause.

Some think that it is related to a nearby construction project on Lake Killarney. Strange equipment was spotted at the edge of the lake recently, causing neighbors to wonder what the nature of the project is.

The truck belongs to Henderson Wilder Contractor of Orange County, a firm that does soil stabilization for sinkholes. Neighbors reported feeling their homes vibrating when the equipment is used.

And all of this on Blumenauer’s birthday.

What do you think? Was Blumenauer lucky to be out of the house when the Florida sinkhole swallowed her swimming pool? Worst birthday present ever? Sound off!
