25 Shot, Six Killed In 48 Hours In NYC

Twenty-five (25) people were shot in 48 hours this weekend in New York City. The shocking series of gun crimes occurred in four of the five boroughs, leaving only Staten Island gunfire free.

Six people were killed — three each on Saturday and Sunday.

One of the injured was 11-year-old Tayloni Mazyck, a bystander who was presumably hit by accident when a 17-year-old man believed to be Kane Cooper fired at two men. She was shot in the neck and may now be paralyzed.

The New York Daily News has published a very complete list of the weekend wave of shootings.

Only one person was shot in Manhattan, but that man was hit several times in the chest and died on the scene in broad daylight.

Many of the shootings took place in Brooklyn including a triple shooting believed to have been committed by 30-year-old Kevon Brown, who finished up the frightening attack by firing on police officers as he fled the scene. He wounded three men but fortunately didn’t hit the officers.

As horrifying as the numbers sound — and, make no mistake, 25 shot in 48 hours does sound frightening — New York City is actually doing better overall this year than it was at this time in 2012. There have been 440 shootings this year in NYC, a 23 percent decline from the 574 reported by this time last year.

Some people will see this weekend as a statistical blip. Others will point to it as proof that New York’s strict gun control laws aren’t working.

A wave of Memorial Day gun violence in Chicago aroused a lot of anger from people who said that the Second City’s gun control laws were ineffective. That grim weekend also left six dead, but it was a longer weekend thanks to the holiday.
