Tyler Perry ‘Sensed’ Whitney Houston’s Death [Video]

Whitney Houston’s sudden death on February 11, 2012, came as a surprise to many people — but apparently not to Tyler Perry.

Perry opened up to Oprah on an upcoming episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, and discussed how he reached out to Houston to try and help her through her battle with substance abuse. He began by talking about the first time Houston spoke candidly with him about her problems during a restaurant outing. Unfortunately, neither Perry’s efforts, nor those of family and friends, could save the icon.

“I felt a huge responsibility for her,” Perry said. “From the first day we sat down in that restaurant and had a conversation where she was so open with me, I felt a responsibility to do all I could to help her.”

Perry went on to say, “I sensed — like most people who deal with people who have addiction issues — they sense that there [was] a death day coming.” He added that he offered her family emotional support whenever they needed it.

On the anniversary of Houston’s death, Perry urged fans to remember the singer and pray for her family, especially her daughter, Bobbi Kristina. He also asked fans to pray for other people in the entertainment industry, “especially these young people who come in so bright-eyed and eager, only to have it tear at their very souls.”

He wrote about thinking it was a “sick joke” that she had passed, and how he went to her room in the Beverly Hilton Hotel and found her family “broken down, inconsolobale.”

Perry went on to say, “Whitney was a fighter. She really tried to get herself together. She really tried to overcome. She really wanted to, and I also know that, like me, a lot of you were praying and rooting for her.”
