Zoe Saldana Defends Allure Weight Reveal

The Zoë Saldana photo shoot for the June Allure is definitely something that no red-blooded Star Trek Into Darkness fan will want to miss. For one thing, photographer Tim Munro took some decidedly spicy shots of the actress, including one where she wears a gold H.Stern cuff and not a stitch more. Wowsers.

Despite Saldana’s uninhibited interview and provocative pictures, it’s the Allure cover that sparked the controversy this week. As you can see, it bills the photo spread and interview as, “Zoë Saldana: 115 Pounds of Grit and Heartache.”

I’m pretty sure that Allure expected to win some eyeballs with the promise of Saldana going completely nude on the inside. Instead, they came under fire for revealing her weight to whole wide world.

Many posters felt moved to speak their minds on Allure’s Facebook page — where, in all fairness to the magazine, they opened the discussion to all points of view. A poster named Amy Lamborn summed up a popular argument against the weight reveal:

“Zoë Saldana, yes, it was a mistake to print her weight. Women and girls have it in their face constantly, every single day, that they are supposed to be rail-thin…[T]he articles are nearly 98% of the time about women. That is bad enough, but in this case, throwing out an exact figure raises a challenge — especially to young vulnerable girls, who will be further encouraged to starve themselves, because now they have a goal – to weigh exactly what Zoë Saldana weighs.”

So it has come to this. Yes, 115 is on the slim side, and I’d watch out for those elbows but c’mon. It isn’t exactly anorexic territory, is it?

But there was so much pushback against Allure magazine exposing Saldana’s weight that she ended up on Today Thursday to defend the magazine for its decision to run the cover.

In that interview, Saldana said:

“I think it would have been wrong if they were lying…about my weight. This is how much I weigh. It’s something I can’t control. It’s who I am…I was a ballet dancer …I don’t think it was to make an issue of my weight. I think it was to talk about that for a lightweight person I seem to be really strong minded.”

Whatever you think of the cover, something tells me that you’ll want to buy a copy of Allure to get more thoroughly informed on the subject of Zoë Saldana. Enjoy.
