Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag‘s story has been explained.
Assassin’s Creed gave us the story of Desmond Miles, a man who had been a bartender until Abstergo kidnapped him and forced him to play the most immersive videogame ever invented. Yes, you played a character who plays a videogame because he has no choice. Anyway, the story unfolds that Desmond Miles had a long line of assassins in his ancestry, including the Israeli Altair, the Italian Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and the Native American Connor. He was being used to find the Pieces of Eden, artifacts that grant the one who possesses them dominion over others, as well as other powers not so clearly explained.
The reason Desmond Miles was put through all of this was so the Knights Templar, who secretly owned Abstergo, could have all of that power for themselves.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is a tale about a British pirate, but you knew that already. What you might not know is that the main character Edward Kenway has a wife and a home, which makes us question his tendency toward debauchery and greed. He spends his time on the high seas trying to get rich and using his women to gain advantages over his targets. In the end, he is trying to gain wealth and respect back home.
The pirate Edward Kenway is Connor’s grandfather.
Darby McDevitt, the screenplay writer for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, said:
“His primary motivation in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a ‘man of quality’ to his family and betters. So there is a special woman in Edward [Kenway]’s life, but there are also other not-so-special women as well. … While this scene in the reveal trailer was clearly designed hint at the pirate lifestyle, there is a gameplay element here, to show that you can use certain NPC characters to more effectively achieve your goals. You might have noticed that the woman [who was part of the earlier ménage] in the foreground seduced his target at the end of the trailer.”
So now you know what Edward Kenway is in it for.
