AIK Goalkeeper Found Dead In His Apartment

AIK goalkeeper Ivan Turina was found dead in his Stockholm apartment on Thursday morning.

The 32 year old had a congenital heart problem that the club was fully aware of and AIK revealed that the father of two young children died in his sleep.

“It is with great sorrow and shock that we can confirm that Ivan Turina passed away on the night between Wednesday and Thursday,” read a club statement.

“Ivan died suddenly in his sleep and at the moment no crime is suspected.”

Henok Goitom was Turina’s neighbour in the apartment complex and he expressed his sadness at the sudden death of his beloved team-mate.

“Yesterday was an ordinary day and today Ivan is dead,” he stated. “It’s a shock. The AIK supporters loved him.

“It’s a slap in the face for everyone but we are united as a group and we’re trying to help everyone in AIK and his family.”

The Croatian made one appearance for his country when he came on as a substitute in the 4-0 win against Hong Kong on February 26, 2006.

Turina made 65 appearances for AIK between the posts and recently extended his contract with the club. AIK chairman Johan Segui couldn’t believe the news as he was sure that Turina was in good health.

“We knew that he had a congenital heart problem but he was completely healthy,” Segui said.

Turina is survived by his wife, who is expecting a third child, and his twin daughters.

The news that AIK goalkeeper Ivan Turina was found dead in his apartment has shocked the club’s players and officials and it is not yet known if the next game against IFK Gottenborg will be postponed.
