No Steve Carell In ‘The Office’ Finale, Says Greg Daniels

Fans hoping to see Michael Scott in the series finale of The Office are going to be disappointed. Executive producer Greg Daniels said that there would be no Steve Carell when the show wraps up on May 19.

Daniels said that he talked to Carell about a return for the finale but they both agreed that it would be a distraction from the current storyline.

Daniels said: “I think Steve felt, and I agree, that the ‘Goodbye, Michael’ episode was his goodbye and he didn’t want to overshadow the ending that all the other characters deserved.”

Steve Carell won’t be the only “Michael Scott” not returning for the finale. A recent rumor said that Ricky Gervais would make an appearance before the end of the season but that rumor was squashed earlier this week.

So what should fans expect? Daniels said that the final episode of the hist NBC show would be similar to the final episode of the original British version. The American version of The Office steered away from the story lines of the original after its first season but the show will return to its roots when it ends later this month.

Daniels said: “After attempting to beat that (British) ending in a number of different ways, we ended up doing something very similar.”

NBC released a synopsis earlier this week saying that the final episode will take place at a wedding a few months after documentary makes them all reality stars.

NBC writes: “Months after the airing of the documentary, the workers of Dunder Mifflin, past and present, gather for a wedding and a final round of interviews. Mysteries are solved, hatchets are buried, pranks are prunked.”
