Jason Collins’ Ex-Fiancee: ‘I Had No Idea He Was Gay’

The former fiancee of Jason Collins, the NBA star who came out as gay earlier this week, has claimed that she had no idea he was gay, even though she dated him for eight years.

Carolyn Moos and Collins separated in 2009 after he decided to cancel their wedding, leaving her confused and heartbroken.

Moos is herself a former basketball player, and she revealed that when the news was delivered her last weekend by Collins himself she was shocked. Collins then admitted that his sexuality was the reason for the demise of their relationship.

The 34 year-old told TMZ, “It’s very emotional for me as a woman to have invested eight years in my dream to have a husband, soul mate, and best friend in him. So this is all hard to understand.”

She continued, “I care about [Jason] tremendously and only want the best for him. I want Jason to be happy for a lifetime and stay true to who he really is, inside and out.” Moos is a personal trainer, model and a former professional basketball player.

Collins came out as gay yesterday during an interview with ABC, stating, “I always knew I was gay, it’s like you know that the sky is blue but you keep telling yourself it is red. I fought it for a long time but when you finally get to the point of acceptance there is nothing more beautiful. It feels incredible.”

When asked about how it would affect his stance in the game, Collins added, “It doesn’t matter that you’re gay. The key thing is that it’s about basketball. It’s about working hard. it’s about sacrificing for your team, it’s all about dedication and that’s what you should focus on.”

Collins has been universally praised for his bravery, and it is hoped that his honesty will encourage others to do the same.
