‘Vacation’ Reboot Delayed Indefinitely At New Line

The Vacation reboot that was taking shape over at New Line Cinema has been delayed indefinitely by the studio.

The Hangover alum Ed Helms was slated to star as Rusty Griswold in the update of the classic Chevy Chase comedy. The film reportedly follows Rusty as he embarks on a troubled road trip with his own family.

Although the Vacation reboot was in pre-production at New Line, it’s being reported that the studio has but the brakes on the feature. Filming was tentatively scheduled to begin in July.

The trouble began when the studio couldn’t decide if they wanted to deliver a teen-friendly PG-13 flick or a raunchy R-rated feature that was more in line with the original movie. A source recently explained to The Hollywood Reporter that it’s unknown when production will begin.

In addition to Ed Helms, the Vacation reboot — or remake, depending on who you ask — features Christina Applegate as Rusty’s wife. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo were expected to make cameos in the flick.

Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein are slated to direct the comedy. The film would serve as the directorial debut for the duo. Unfortunately, it would appear that the project is currently stalled at New Line.

It’s currently unclear how the delay will affect production on the movie. While some have indicated that everything will be pushed back a few months, others believe the reboot may not start shooting until later this year.

Nobody seems to know who was involved with the ratings debate. However, the source explained to THR that the problem boiled over on Friday. This prompted New Line and parent company Warner Bros. to halt pre-production until an unspecified date.

Penned by acclaimed writer-director John Hughes, the original National Lampoon’s Vacation hit theaters on July 29, 1983. The R-rated comedy grossed $61 million during its theatrical run.
