‘SimCity’ Getting Major Update Later Today

SimCity is releasing a new patch later today that is supposed to improve the overall functionality of the game while adding a couple of minor tweaks here and there. In order to patch the game, the servers will need to go offline for a couple of hours starting at 4 pm ET.

Electronic Arts and Maxis have seen quite a bit of anger directed at the two companies since the always-on game went live complete with enough server issues that many people couldn’t play it for the first few days after release.

Now the game will go down again, though the companies say that when it comes back up, about two hours later players will be quite happy with the changes that are going to be made.

SimCity‘s minor tweaks include the ability for the mayor of the town to get around using either their fancy cars or their helicopters if that module is actually available. HUD and data map tweaks will show off the right colors when those modes are being used.

The problems that the patch will really be fixing is some of the major playability issues that the game has had since it was first released. The modifications should mean that the game as a whole will function that much better all the way around.

EA and Maxis both believe that once the game is actually updated and put back online that gamers will see quite a few differences. Tweaks to seemingly little features such as air pollution, education, and traffic will all make the game that much more like it is acting like a real city.

While EA and Maxis understand that the game going offline again might annoy some players, they also believe that this time the wait will be worth it.

Are you playing SimCity and are you looking forward to the patch?
