3 Doors Down Bassist Arrested After Deadly Car Crash

3 Doors Down bassist Todd Harrell has been arrested for allegedly causing a crash that killed another driver on the streets of Nashville late Friday night, according to local authorities.

Harrell was taken into custody and charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication following the fatal incident. This isn’t the first time the 3 Doors Down bassist has been arrested. In July 2012, the 41-year-old musician was charged with driving under the influence after crashing into a pickup truck in Mississippi.

This time, Todd Harrell’s actions allegedly caused the death of 47-year-old Tennessee resident Paul Howard Shoulders Jr, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

An initial investigation by police reportedly indicated that Harrell was speeding through the Nashville suburb of Hermitage when the fatal crash occurred.

The 3 Doors Down bassist apparently struck Shoulder’s Ford pickup, sending it crashing into a guard rail. The truck continued down an embankment, flipping upside down as it landed, and throwing the man from his vehicle.

Paul Shoulders was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained during the crash.

Meanwhile, according to police, Harrell’s car smacked into a retaining wall and came to a stop roughly a quarter of a mile from the site of the initial impact.

The 3 Doors Down bassist was arrested after failing field sobriety tests administered at the scene. Police indicate that “he acknowledged consuming hard cider and taking prescription Lortab and Zanax” prior to getting behind the wheel.

Once Harrell was taken into custody, police reportedly discovered several controlled substances hidden in the 3 Doors Down bassist’s sock. His concealment of eight Xanax, four Oxymorphone, and 24 Oxycodone pills resulted in an additional charge of bringing controlled substances into the jail after being arrested.

Todd Harrell is one of the original members of 3 Doors Down, best known for their mega-hit “Kryptonite.” The band released a brief statement on its official website after the bassist was arrested:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
