Tomlinson cut by the Chargers

Even though we all saw this coming, this is the end of an era, and it should make all football fans a little sad. Today the San Diego Chargers cut RB LaDainian Tomlinson. This is the end of a brilliant nine year run where Tomlinson became one of the league’s best RB’s but the team never achieved the success of its most famous member.

On one had nine years is an excellent run for a player, especially a RB, but on the other I have to wonder if Tomlinson still has something in the tank. Beyond being the most beloved figure in the San Diego sports scene, it is hard to believe that Tomlinson is a broken down aging veteran. To be perfectly honest we have seen this team make questionable decisions in the past, Drew Brees, comes to mind and I really wonder if they pulled the plug on LT a little early.

Of course the flip side of that argument is LT failed to reach a 1,000 yards rushing in 2009 and his overall performance has been slipping these past few years. The Chargers position on this is clear; they feel he is used up. However I would be willing to bet LT lands with another NFL team, maybe one who can decrease his role in the offense, and allow him to have several more productive years.

On a more personal level, my best friend hails from San Diego and is one of the biggest Chargers fans I know. Of course LT was his favorite player of this generation, so much so that when I gave him one of my Pit Bull Puppies I named him LT. LT (the Pit Bull) is now six years old, and one of the best dogs I have had the pleasure to be around.
