‘Scary Movie 5’ Review Roundup

Scary Movie 5 was released today in theaters. See what the critics had to say.

Scary Movie is a series of parodies that has received such acclaim that either you love it or you hate it. The first of the series had Anna Faris playing the primary role making fun of Neve Campbell’s character in the Scream films. The second one didn’t seem to have any one movie to spoof, as it went after Hannibal and The Exorcist, among others. The third Scary Movie spoofed Signs and 8 Mile, and gave us Charlie Sheen’s first appearance in the series. Scary Movie IV made fun of the Tom Cruise remake of War of the Worlds.

Different people had varied opinions on every one of them, but it seems the critics all seem to agree that Scary Movie 5 was a bomb.

It’s fitting that Lindsay Lohan stars in Scary Movie 5, as she’s an actress trying to be funny and turns out scary anyway. She sets the tone for the rest of the movie in that way. She shares a scene with Charlie Sheen where they are supposedly preparing to make a sex tape when some paranormal activity happens. You know where this is going.

Basically, this film plays out like an episode of one of those sketch comedy shows, making it almost fitting that this series originally began under the direction of In Living Color‘s Keenan Ivory Wayans. Almost fitting, if it wasn’t trying so hard to make us laugh.

Scary Movie 5 is a movie that basically acts out the jokes you likely read on Twitter years ago. Most of them are old, and have been done better already.

Ashley Tisdale replaces Anna Faris this time around, and looks outright annoyed the whole time. And we can’t blame her.

David Zucker, known for his comedy prowess with Naked Gun and Airplane, directed Scary Movie 5. It’s all too obvious that he’s run out of actual jokes. It’s just sad that this film tries to riff on Mama and Paranormal Activity, as these family-in-danger movies themselves tended toward the tediously repetitive.

Scary Movie 5 is like joke time with that one old guy who tries his best to be a comedian. The jokes are old, and you find yourself laughing just to make him feel better.
