Tom Cruise Divorce Quotes Are Fake, Actor’s Rep Says

It seems like Tom Cruise doesn’t have much to say about his divorce from Katie Holmes after all.

Just a day after it was reported that Cruise went on German television to talk about being blindsided by Holmes by the couple’s divorce, it turns out that the quotes from German tabloid Bunte were mostly fabricated.

“The entire interview was about his career. He was not asked any personal questions,” said a rep for the actor.

Apparently, instead of talking about his divorce Tom Cruise kept the conversation focused on his upcoming movie, Oblivion.

“For my 50th birthday [the director] Joe and the studio gave me a bubble bike,” Cruise actually told ProSieben. “It was so amazing … I was allowed to ride it in areas where you are no longer allowed to drive. [Iceland] is a beautiful country.”

It was a fake Tom Cruise quote about his divorce from Katie Holmes that drew the most attention.

“I did not expect that,” Cruise reportedly said, adding: “Life is a challenge…To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you — that’s what life is … Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor.”

The comments came as a surprise as Tom Cruise hadn’t spoken publicly about his divorce before. In June the couple announced their separation, as Katie Holmes reportedly filed papers on an unsuspecting Tom. The couple has a daughter, Suri, together.

Their divorce has played out quickly but very publicly, with news outlets covering nearly every aspect of the proceedings as well as their custody arrangements with Suri.

The interviewer for ProSieben, Steven Gaetjen, confirmed that he and Tom Cruise never spoke about divorce and that the quotes were fake. Still, the fabricated reports traveled the internet at the speed of gossip, generating headlines on E!, USA Today, and The Huffington Post among many others.
