Sergio Aguero’s Late Goal Leads Man City To Win In Manchester Derby

Manchester City has no chance of catching Manchester United in the English Premier League standings in 2013, but, for the second straight season, they have gone into Old Trafford and stunned United. Striker Sergio Aguero came into the match late in the second half and netted his 10th goal in the Premier League to beat United 2-1.

In Manchester City’s last appearance at Old Trafford, they scored six goals and humiliated United before going on to win the Premier League title. This year, United has run away from City in the standings in hopes of regaining their title but came into the match with a settle to score from last year.

The two clubs were aggressive early in the first half and traded a few shots before the pace slowed down. Manchester City controlled the play most of the half until a late rush by United led by Robin Van Persie.

Van Persie started next to Wayne Rooney for the first time in three matches but missed a great opportunity on City’s goalkeeper Joe Hart late in the half. The teams were even going into the second half and it stayed that way until the 51st minute when James Milner scored from just outside the box off an assist from Samir Nasri.

Just eight minutes later, Van Persie took a free kick for United just outside the box and found Phil Jones, who headed the ball off Vincent Kompany’s back to tie the match at one. Vincent Kompany was credited with the own-goal and the Citizens were back to even as the United crowd was back in the match.

Sergio Aguero came into the match in the 71st minute and it didn’t take long for him to find the back of the net. After a great run into the box, Aguero beat United goalkeeper David De Gea to give City a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute.

Aguero hasn’t started since he injured his knee during training in early March and is limited to one half of play a match until he has fully recovered. Nevertheless, he had a step on United defenders when he sealed the win for the Citizens.

Aguero is most known for his title-winning goal against the Queens Park Rangers last year that stunned United and gave City their third Premier League title.

Manchester United is closing in on winning back the Premier League title this season, but it didn’t seem to affect the Citizens on Monday. Manchester City got the best of the Red Devils for the second straight time at Old Trafford and walk away as the Manchester Derby winners.
