Scott Boras wants the Detroit Tigers to sign Johnny Damon

Scott Boras is one of Major League Baseball’s Super Agents, and over the past four or five years he has made a living off getting big contracts for the players he represents from the Detroit Tigers. Way back in 2004 the Tigers had to pay out big bucks to get players to come and play for them, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, and yet Boras is still trying to force his clients on the team.

The latest Boras client to come to Detroit in search of a big free agent deal is Johnny Damon. The less than youthful former New York Yankee. Boras has made many statements saying that Damon can make the Tigers a winner in 2010. Boras has used the argument that Damon went to the Boston Red sox and they won, then on to the New York Yankees and they won. He seems to think that Damon was teh key ingredient to the success of both of those teams.

Since that argument doesn’t really hold much water Boras has recently changed his tune a bit. Now he is peddling the idea that he brought the key ingredients to the Tigers that helped them win the American League Pennant in 2006. Here he has a strong case, Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, and Kenny Rogers are all Boras clients that came to Detroit and played significant roles in a team that made it all the way to the world series.

However he spent much of the 2009 season criticizing Tigers Manager Jim Leyland over a performance clause in Ordonez’s contract. Boras was arguing that the Tigers were sitting his player in order to stay away from a guaranteed 18 million dollar salary for 2010. Magglio ultimately reached the incentive clause and his contract has cost the team dearly. The Tigers do not need Damon, nor do they need Boras bringing anymore of his clients to town
