Katey Sagal Cast As Artie’s Mom On ‘Glee’

Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal has been cast as Artie’s mother on Glee.

Creator Ryan Murphy announced the news on Twitter, writing, “So thrilled to announce my friend Katey Sagal is playing Artie’s mom on Glee! There is nothing this woman can’t do!”

Kevin McHale, who plays Artie on the Fox dramedy, also wrote, “Artie’s gettin a hot mama” with a little image of a fire. He added, “couldn’t stop smiling all night #lovemyjob.”

Sagal will make her guest appearance in the episode “Wonder-ful,” which is the 21st episode of the current fourth season.

If you’re wondering if Peggy Bundy has singing chops, don’t worry. It’s a little known fact that Sagal used to be a background singer for Better Midler.

“That was how made a living being a background singer for years. I was one of the Harlettes,” Sagal told Rolling Stone in 2011. “Now if you go to see Bette’s show the Harlettes are mostly dancers, but in the old days, when I worked with her it was really a vocal-heavy gig. So we did a lot of the singing behind her.”

Sagal also sings occasionally on Sons of Anarchy because her husband, series creator Kurt Fuller, likes the way she sings.

“I sang ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ in season one,” she said. “He just decided that I was going to sing every season, one song every season. It was really his impetus that got me to do that. I was pleased to help.”

In addition to Sons of Anarchy, Katey Sagal has provided the voice of Turanga Leela on Futurama for seven seasons. In “A Bicyclops Built for Two,” the ninth episode of season 2, Sagal paid homage to her iconic Married with Children character. Leela donned Peggy Bundy’s signature bouffant hairdo, skintight pants, low-cut shirt and stiletto heels.
