‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ Is Going To Happen Whether You Like It Or Not

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 has been scheduled to start filming later this year, and the film is going to happen whether you like it or not.

According to a report late last week from Collider, Craig Robinson (Nick in the first film or Darryl from The Office as you most likely know him) confirmed the sequel would start shooting in June. He was also optimistic about a John Cusack return, though nothing has been confirmed.

(Cusack may have to work around his Rush Limbaugh project to climb aboard.)

Robinson did say that he’d seen an early version of the script, but didn’t reveal any details as to whether the film would once again take place in the 1980s or if they would bump it up a decade.

You’re probably asking yourself, “How could this happen, wasn’t the first a box office fail?”

Actually, no. According to the numbers at Box Office Mojo, the 2010 film was not only a success, but a resounding one. Shot on a budget of just $36 million, it grossed $50 million domestically and another $14 million overseas.

In all, the $64 million take almost doubled what it cost to make, thus laying the groundwork for a new entry.

Hot Tub Time Machine was also a marginal success with critics earning a “fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes of around 63 percent out of 196 total reviews.

The user community didn’t respond quite as well, however, granting the film a 56 percent out of 151,803 ratings at the time of this post. IMDb users were slightly kinder to the quirky time travel effort, giving the film a 6.4 / 10.

Still, of all the projects out there to pick, it’s a little confounding that Hot Tub Time Machine 2 would be a project attracting the likes of Cusack, Robinson, Clark Duke, and Rob Corddry.

Then again, G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation happened and is actually (somehow) doing well at the box office, so what do we know?

The original centered on a quartet of loser buddies, who are inexplicably transported to 1986 via a hot tub that doubles as a time machine (unbeknownst to them).

Despite feeling like their older versions, three of the buddies find themselves in their younger bodies getting a second chance to alter the course of their lives.

Duke is along for the ride as the young nephew of one of the men.

Are you excited about the possibility of a Hot Tub Time Machine 2? What did you think of the first one?
