Robert Guerrero Arrested: Boxing Champ Busted On Gun Charge At JFK Airport

Authorities say a top boxer was arrested Thursday morning on a weapons charge at JFK Airport.

According to WABC News, welterweight contender Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, was arrested by Port Authority Police after he attempted to board a flight with a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun in his possesion.

Police say Guerrero, who turned 30 on Wednesday, was checking in at a ticket counter Thursday morning when he informed the booking clerk that he had an unloaded gun on him. As required by law, the agent called the Port Authority Police who arrested the athlete upon their arrival.

Fox News NY reports he is being charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Prior to his arrest at JFK airport, Guerrero was traveling around New York City to promote his upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather for the WBC Welterweight title.

The New York Post reports Guerrero arrived in the city on Monday and said the “media knows he is a hunter and requested he bring the weapon for a photo op.”

Yahoo! Sports also notes Guerrero appeared on the Christian Broadcasting Network’s The 700 Club earlier in the week along with his wife Casey, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2007.

During the episode, Guerrero candidly spoke to show host Pat Robertson about his Christian faith and of how he got through his wife’s life-threatening illness.

It is unknown whether the gun charges will jeopardize the Guerreo-Mayweather fight, which is scheduled to take place on May 4, 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
