‘Pretty Little Liars’ Gets A Renewal And ‘Ravenswood’ Spinoff

ABC has renewed its teen drama Pretty Little Liars for a fifth season.

The series, which airs on ABC Family, just wrapped up its third season last week. The finale was the No. 1 telecast for the 11th consecutive week among females 12-34. It was also cable’s No. 1 telecast in women 18-34 and 18-49. The episode pulled in 1.76 million viewers and scored a 3.8 rating. The episode also became the first in history to receive over 1 million airtime tweets.

The spinoff, titled Ravenswood, will be executive produced by PLL EP Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick, Joseph Dougherty, and Leslie Morgenstein. King, Goldstick, and Dougherty will also be writing the spinoff, which takes place in the eponymous town. Ravenswood, a neighboring town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania — where Pretty Little Liars takes place — has been under a deadly curse for generations and five strangers who find themselves connected to the curse need to dig into the town’s history before it’s too late. The series will debut in October after the Pretty Little Liars Halloween special, which is expected to introduce some of the Ravenswood characters.

Pretty Little Liars is brand-defining and demo-defining for ABC Family. We are proud to be able to grow the PLL franchise in two ways — both by adding additional seasons of the original and by extending the storytelling into a spinoff,” said ABC Family President Michael Riley. “Ravenswood will become another ‘must-tweet-TV’ series for us. Our viewers have an incredible ability to amplify messages and create buzz around things that interest them, including our shows and talent.”

Pretty Little Liars is based on the young adult books of the same name by Sara Shepard. The series debuted on June 8, 2010 with an initial order of 10 episodes, but 12 more episodes were added. The success of the first season eventually prompted the book series to extend beyond the original eight novels.

The fourth season of Pretty Little Liars began filming on March 14 and will premiere on June 11.
